Caring for jewelry
Care has to be taken with every piece of silver jewelry you possess. Silver reacts with atmospheric gases to form a thin layer called tarnish, which in the beginning will be a yellowish tinge and then turn into a blackish purple coating. Removing this tarnish is the first thing you need to do while taking care of your precious silver jewelry.
Here are a couple of simple steps to remove tarnish:
1) If the tarnish is in the beginning stage (yellowish tinge) its enough if you rub it with silver polishing cloth (you can find them at super markets, online jewelry accessory stores or jewelry outlets). The tarnish turns out as grey on the cloth.
2) If the tarnish is at its worst, drop your tarnished silver into an aluminum pan of hot water containing a mixture of 2 spoons of salt and two spoons of baking soda. Rinse and dry. Wrap it in an anti-tarnish paper. Within a few days your lustrous silver jewelry will be back.
Caring for silver jewelry you wear everyday:
1) Remove your valuable silver jewelry while washing, doing dishes, handling chemicals, bathing etc. The chemicals and cleaning agents might harm the jewelry.
2) Avoid using studded silver jewelry while doing exercises and when you go to sleep for you might lose the precious gemstones.
3) Ensure that you do not bring silver jewelry in contact with other jewelry; friction might cause scratches on your favorite piece.
Taking good care of silver jewelry is as important as buying the perfect one. Silver is one of the most durable metals, provided proper care is taken.
